Etymology: Aphyosemion: Greek, aphye, -es, sardine, anchovy + Greek, semeion = mark, signal (Ref. 45335);  ecucuense: The species is named after the Rio Ecucu, in the northern coastal plain of Equatorial Guinea (Ref. 74419).

Espinas dorsales (total): 0; Radios blandos dorsales (total): 11-12; Espinas anales 0; Radios blandos anales: 13 - 15. Scales are cycloid; body and head entirely scaled, except ventral surface of head; no scales on dorsal- and anal-fin base, 2-3 on caudal-fin base (Ref. 74419). Scales on mid-longitudinal series 25-27, transverse series of scales above pelvic fin 8-9 (Ref. 74419). Open frontal neuromast system with two separate grooves, preopercular canal with 6 pores (Ref. 74419). Several rows of hooked and unicuspid teeth on upper and lower jaws (Ref. 74419).
