Etymology: Eviota: No etymology given, suggested by Christopher Scharpt: from Latin 'eu' for 'true' and 'iota' for anything very small, in combination 'truly very small' referring to it as being the smallest vertebrate at the time it has benn described by Jenkins (thus, making the suggestion by Scharpt plausible.;  amamiko: Named for the Goddess of the Ryukyu Islands in Japanese mythology; noun in apposition..

Espinas dorsales (total): 7; Radios blandos dorsales (total): 8; Espinas anales 1; Radios blandos anales: 8. This species is distinguished by the following set of characters: cephalic sensory-canal pores absent; dorsal/anal fin-ray formula 8/8; pectoral-fn rays 14-15; no 5th pelvic-fn ray or rudimentary; urogenital papillae of both sexes non-fimbriate; five dark brown irregularly shaped (usually X- or Y-like) bars on body; two narrow diagonal red lines below the eye; anal-fin base with two reddish-brown spots; caudal peduncle without dark spots over preural centrum; caudal-fin base no crescentic marks (Ref. 130266).
