Etymology: Bujurquina: A name created by Kullander, taken from a native Peruvian word for these cichlids, "bujurqui" or "bufurque"; 1983-1986; beniensis: Name refers to the type locality Rio Beni, the only drainage in the Bolivian Amazon; an adjective (Ref. 128932).

This species can be distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: longer snout; deeper head, body and caudal peduncle; shorter pectoral fin; more scales in the E1 series; discontinuous longitudinal band, bars 5 and 6 not fused; preopercular spot; no coloration pattern on flank scales (Ref. 128932)
This species inhabits streams and whitewater riverbanks (Ref. 128932).
