Etymology: Xenisthmus: Greek, xenos = strange + Greek, isthmos = throat, narrow passage (Ref. 45335);  nigrolateralis: Name from Latin 'nigrolateralis', combination of 'niger' or deep black and 'lateralis' for broad stripe, referring to the unique lateral colouration pattern..

The species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: D2 I,13; A I,13; pectoral fin rays16; longitudinal scale series 68-70; perdorsal scales 23; vertebral count 10 + 16 = 26; preopercular canal with rather more, 5 pores ?1, ?, ?, ?, and ?1, Colouration: lateral side of trunk with a broad, deep brown stripe from the rear of lateral gill opening to caudal fin base; dorsal profile of the lateral, broad deep brown stripe with waving margin; caudal with median blackish brown mark, and with outer region translucent; caudal fin base with a vertical black bar (Ref. 127452).
