Etymology: Cryptocentrus: Greek, kryptos = hidden + Greek, kentron = sting (Ref. 45335);  steinhardti: Named for Michael H. Steinhardt, in recognition of his important contribution to the establishment and construction of the Steinhardt Museum of Natural History, Tel Aviv University, Israel..

Description synthétique Morphologie | Morphométrie

This species is distinguished by the following characters: 59-61 rows of cycloid scales along the body, predorsal scales 20-21, reaching ca. A total of 3/4 of the distance to eye and 19-21 transverse rows; scales covering the abdomen and prepelvic region, none on pectoral-fin base; D1 VI, D2 I, 10-11, rays segmented (last one branched); A I,9-10 segmented rays (last one branched); pectoral-fin rays 15; pelvic fins are completely united with a well-developed fraenum; caudal-fin rays with 17 segmented rays, 13 branched; gill rakers on first gill arch, 10-11, upper limb with one at the angle, and 7-8 onlower limb, the three posterior rakers are very short; head sensory papillae in transverse pattern (Ref. 126572).
