Etymology: Macrhybopsis: Greek, makros = great + Greek, ybos, -e, -on = rounded + Greek, opsis = appearance (Ref. 45335);  etnieri: Named after Dr. David A. Etnier, Emeritus Professor of Zoology at the University of Tennessee, for his many contributions to southeastern ichthyology and aquatic biology, including co-authorship of the definitive book on the fishes of Tennessee..
