Etymology: Pseudomystus: Greek, pseudes = false + Greek, mystax = whiskered, used by Belon in 1553 to describe all fishes with whiskers (Ref. 45335);  funebris: The specific epithet comes from the Latin funebris, meaning "of a funeral". Being clothed in black is traditionally associated with funerals, and the name alludes to the blackwater habitat of this species (Ref. 83674).

Description synthétique Morphologie | Morphométrie

Épines dorsales (Total): 1; Rayons mous dorsaux (Total): 7. Distinguished from congeners except for Pseudomystus heokkuii (from Sumatra) in having a color pattern consisting of a pale midlateral stripe and two pale oblique bands on the sides of the body.
