Etymology: Aulonocara: Greek, aulos = flute + Greek, kara = face, head (Ref. 45335);  gertrudae: Named after Dr. Gertrud Dudin, wife of Ad Koning, for her moral support, her interest in cichlids, and for her patience (Ref. 40898).

Dorsale stekels (totaal): 16 - 18; Dorsale zachte stralen (totaal): 9-11; Anale stekels 3; Anale zachte stralen: 8 - 9. Males from the northern populations with a bright orange patch on shoulder (absent in southern populations) (Ref. 40898).
