Etymology: Gymnelus: Gymnelus, derived from Greek, gymnēlos (Latinized Greek) = poor, needy (akin to Greek gymnos for destitute (E. Spencer, pers.comm. 09/13).;  diporus: From the Greek word 'diporus', meaning two-pore (Ref. 36338). M.E. Anderson believes this species is probably a synonym of Gymnelus hemifasciatus (Ref. 51665).

Spine dorsali (totale): 0; Raggi dorsali molli (totale): 85-88; Spine anali 0; Raggi anali molli: 69 - 75; Vertebre: 88 - 94. Gymnelus diporus belongs to the group of species with widely interrupted supratemporal commissure. It is further characterized as not having a posteriorly shifted beginning of the dorsal fin, a narrow and long pectoral fin, short snout, color with multiple (up to 18) bands, and a small size (Ref. 36338).
