Etymology: Oregonichthys: The state of Oregon in USA? + ichthys; kalawatseti: Named after the Kalawatset, a tidewater Umpqua people (Oregon) best known for attacking Jedidiah H. Smith in 1828. The name is a patronym and genitive singular (Ref. 39605).

Oregonichthys kalawatseti is very similar to O. crameri but can be distinguished by having unscaled or partly scaled breast, slightly subterminal mouth, and 34-40 scales on lateral line (Ref. 86798).
Inhabits sluggish sand- and gravel-bottomed runs, pools and backwaters of creeks and small rivers as well as sloughs. Usually found near vegetations (Ref. 86798).
