Type locality of the holotype of M. ensatus: 'Malawi: Lake Malawi, south east arm, just north west of Boadzulu Island' (Ref. 41276). Found in the southeast arm of Lake Malawi (Ref. 41276, 55954). Known from Chembe and Masasa Reef (Ref. 79521).
