Comments: Type locality of the holotype of M. ensatus: 'Malawi: Lake Malawi, south east arm, just north west of Boadzulu Island' (Ref. 41276). Found in the southeast arm of Lake Malawi (Ref. 41276, 55954). Known from Chembe and Masasa Reef (Ref. 79521).

Etymology: Mylochromis: Greek, mylo = mill + Greek, chromis = a fish without identification, perhaps a perch (Ref. 45335);  ensatus: Specific epithet is the Latin adjective ensatus, meaning shaped like a two-edged sword and refers to the characteristic shallow, straight, elongate body form and the acutely pointed head of this species (Ref. 41276).
