soft rays: 19 - 21. Body coloration reddish-brown with 5-6 diffuse bars on side joined with large uneven, pale spots along upper and lower sides and extends onto brown dorsal fin. Juveniles generally reddish-brown with pearly white band behind lower rear eye margin. Preserved specimens yellow. Dorsal rays III + XXVII, 4-5; tiny scales embedded in skin about 100-110 in lateral series; elongate and compressed body, depth 4.1-4.7 in SL; wide gill opening with members free from isthmus; above each eye is a small nasal tentacle and fimbriate fan-like tentacle (Ref. 90102).
Often seen in weedy reefs typically in cooler waters in areas of upwelling (Ref. 90102).
