Etymology: Priapichthys: Taken from Priapus, the Greek, and Roman god of procreation in the mithology and also = a phallus; diminutive + Greek, ichthys = fish (Ref. 45335); puetzi: Named in honor of the collector Mr. W. Pütz, Würselen, Germany (Ref. 42984).

Vertebrae: 26 - 27. The species lacks a series of vertical stripes along its body sides; males with a large black spot near the base of the gonopodium. Lower pharyngeal bone with a total number of 150 teeth (mean value); conical teeth of ceratobranchial 4, concentrated near the medial region and not extending at the side-arms. The scissor-like shaped gonopodium tip is rounded and strongly curved downward; ray 3 with strongly reduced spines; knob-like wings present dorsally on gonactinosts 5 and 6 of the gonopodial suspensorium (Ref. 42984).
