Vertebrae: 27 - 28. Live color yellow for male yellowish grey for female (Ref. 43716). Longitudinal scales 37-30; TRB 8-10; predorsal scales 11-19; scales on nape reaching nearly up to eyes or past preopercular edge; vertebrae modally 11+16; below the eye often with about 6 short rows of transverse papillae, transverse rows sometimes developed as part of longitudinal rows c and cp (Ref. 43716). Caudal fin rounded to slightly truncate (Ref. 43716).
Facultative air-breathing in the genus (Ref. 126274); Hovers above the substrate, in a slightly diagonal position, with caudal fin curved to one side. Inhabits water at least a meter's depth, over silty substrate, near clumps of aquatic plants and the freshwater mangrove Barringtonia racemosa (Ref. 43716).
