Etymology: Labeotropheus: Latin, labeo = one who has large lips + Greek, tropaion = defeat, a memorial of a fighting war, trophy; because of their specialized teeth were such an obvious feeding adaptation (Ref. 45335). More on author: Ahl.
Environment: milieu / climate zone / depth range / distribution range
Freshwater; benthopelagic; pH range: 7.5 - 8.5; dH range: ? - 12; depth range 1 - 6 m (Ref. ), usually - m (Ref. ). Tropical; 22°C - 25°C (Ref. 1672); 9°S - 15°S
Africa: widely distributed in Lake Malawi, including offshore islands (Ref. 5652, 86863).
Size / Weight / Age
Maturity: Lm ?  range ? - ? cm
Max length : 30.0 cm SL male/unsexed; (Ref. 4364); 8.7 cm SL (female)
Is territorial over rocky substrate (Ref. 6307). Usually feeds alone, or in small groups with other species, on the Aufwuchs cover on rocks in shallow water (Ref. 6307). Occasionally, however, members band and form feeding schools of several hundred fish which raid the rich algal gardens of other species. Also feeds on worms, crustaceans, insects and plant matter (Ref. 7020).
