Etymology: Aphyosemion: Greek, aphye, -es, sardine, anchovy + Greek, semeion = mark, signal (Ref. 45335). More on author: Boulenger.
This species is placed in the genus Mesoaphyosemion in CofF ver. July 2011. This is treated here under Aphyosemion following Collier (2006: Ref. 86645), a study dealing on the whole group of Aphyosemion. The species Panchax obscurus Ahl, 1924 is considered valid in Eschmeyer (CofF ver. Mar. 2012: Ref. 89686). It is treated here a synonym of Aphyosemion cameronense (Boulenger, 1903) following van der Zee et al. (2008: Ref. 80395).

Africa: Sanaga, Nyong, Lobo, Ntem, Ivindo, Dja, Boumba and Doumé rivers in Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon and northwestern Republic of Congo (Ref. 47461).

Occurs in swamps, swampy parts of shallow brooks and small streams under dark forest cover on the inland plains rainforest (Ref. 3788). Not a seasonal killifish. Is difficult to maintain in aquarium (Ref. 27139).
