Short description Identification keys | Morphology | Morphometrics

Diagnosed from other species of Barbus and Luciobarbus in Balkan Peninsula by the following characters: dorsal profile of snout distinctly concave in large individuals; last simple dorsal ray spinous, weakly serrated posteriorly, serrae restricted to about median half of ray; lateral line with 50-54 + 3 scales; body covered by small, weakly marked black spots; and lower lip thick, fleshy, with a median lobe (Ref. 59043).

Biology     Glossary (e.g. epibenthic)

A short-lived species which occurs in lakes and water bodies on low-lying plains, with little current. Feeds on invertebrates and plants (Ref. 26100), preying mainly on Gammarus in lakes and on insects in streams (Ref. 59043). Spawns in tributaries or on gravel beaches in lake, especially near underwater springs (Ref. 59043). Threatened by overfishing and water abstraction (Ref. 26100).

Estimates based on models

Phylogenetic diversity index (Ref. 82804):  PD50 = 0.5000   [Uniqueness, from 0.5 = low to 2.0 = high].
Bayesian length-weight: a=0.01072 (0.00661 - 0.01737), b=3.11 (2.97 - 3.25), in cm total length, based on LWR estimates for this species & (Sub)family-body (Ref. 93245).
Trophic level (Ref. 69278):  2.7   ±0.28 se; based on food items.
Resilience (Ref. 120179):  Medium, minimum population doubling time 1.4 - 4.4 years (Preliminary K or Fecundity.).
Fishing Vulnerability (Ref. 59153):  Low vulnerability (23 of 100).
