Environment: milieu / climate zone / depth range / distribution range
Marine; reef-associated; depth range 0 - 15 m (Ref. 86942), usually 0 - 10 m (Ref. 90102). Tropical; 25°N - 20°S
Indo-Pacific: East Africa to Samoa, north to Yaeyama Islands, south to the northern Great Barrier Reef.
Size / Weight / Age
Maturity: Lm ?  range ? - ? cm
Max length : 12.0 cm TL male/unsexed; (Ref. 90102)
soft rays: 9 - 10. Large ocellus below the 1st dorsal fin, followed by three smaller ones posteriorly (Ref. 1602).
Characterized by greenish brown body color with pale bands; mottling on head; back with 4-5 whitish saddles; lower side with series of bluish-white bands; row of 4-5 large pale-rimmed black spots along middle of side, first is largest and most intense; united pelvic fins, frenum present; longitudinal scale series 54-61; head mainly scaleless, scales on side of nape extending to above posterior margin of preopercle; greatest depth of body 3.8-4.5 in SL (Ref. 90102).
Occurs in silty bottoms of lagoon or coastal reefs (Ref. 9710). Common near areas with terrestrial runoff (Ref. 1602). Lives with alpheid shrimps (Ref. 30404). Found in coastal waters, near reefs on sand with rubble (Ref. 48637). Minimum depth from Ref. 090102.
