Short description Morphology | Morphometrics

Dorsal spines (total): 1; Dorsal soft rays (total): 7; Anal spines: 1; Anal soft rays: 4. This species is distingusied from its congeners by the following characters: teeth bifid (vs. spoon-shaped); dark spots on a light background (vs. light spots on a dark background or not spotted); without 4 rough lateral ridges on flanks (vs. strong ridges present in H. commersoni, H. spiniger, H. laplatae); plates in lateral series 28-30 (vs. < 28 in several species or 31-32 in H. laplatae); body height 13.3-18.1% in SL and head length 25.9-30.7 in SL (vs. 17.724.7% and 27.5-38.7, respectively in H. commersoni, H. spiniger, H. laplatae) (Ref. 121236).

Biology     Glossary (e.g. epibenthic)

Facultative air-breathing in the genus (Ref. 126274); The specimens were recently collected from seven rivers, where the substrate was mainly composed of sandstone boulders with patches of coarse sand and pebbles. It was found in well-oxygenated waters (6.9-11.2 mg/l) with strong current; water turbidity 1.29-75.1 NTU, conductivity 77-4.530 μS/cm, pH 7.8-8.8, and temperature 20.7-31.4°C (Ref. 121236).

Estimates based on models

Phylogenetic diversity index (Ref. 82804):  PD50 = No PD50 data   [Uniqueness, from 0.5 = low to 2.0 = high].
Bayesian length-weight: a=0.01585 (0.00723 - 0.03476), b=2.96 (2.79 - 3.13), in cm total length, based on LWR estimates for this Genus-body shape (Ref. 93245).
Resilience (Ref. 120179):  High, minimum population doubling time less than 15 months (Preliminary K or Fecundity.).
Fishing Vulnerability (Ref. 59153):  Low vulnerability (20 of 100).
