Etymology: Leporinus: Latin, lepus, leporis = rabbit (Ref. 45335); melanopleurodes: Specific name 'melanopleurodes' is from melanopleura, in reference to Leporinus melanopleura, plus the suffix odes, meaning similar to, in allusion to the similarity between this new species and L. melanopleura.
