Etymology: Nothobranchius: Greek, nothos = false + Greek, brangchia = gill (Ref. 45335); hengstleri: Named in honor of the collector, Mr. Holger Hengstler of Munich, Germany.

Morphology | Morphometrics

spines: 14-16. A robust, moderately deep-bodied Nothobranchius with pointed snout, terminal mouth directed upward. Longitudinal series of scales 25-26 + 2-4 on caudal fin base. Males' body profile convex on dorsal and ventral margins, slightly concave on caudal peduncle posterior to dorsal and anal fins. Greatest body depth observed at level of pelvic fins base. Dorsal and anal fins rounded, their tips with rudimentary filamentous rays. Caudal fin perfectly rounded. Membranes of pelvic fins fusing near the base, tips reaching urogenital papilla. Dorsal and anal fins with small papillate contact organs. Opercular membrane projecting from opercle, distal edge slightly wrinkled (ref. 58960).
Type locality is a temporary pool of about 6 m long, 1.5 m wide and 0.10 m deep; no aquatic vegetation present, only dry grass along the shore; water brown and turbid; pH 7.5; no other fish present (Ref. 58960).
