Etymology: Notropis: A misnomer given by Rafinesque to shriveled specimens, with the meaning of "back keel"; from Greek, noton = back (Ref. 45335); melanostomus: melanostomus is a latinization of the Greek melan, an adjective meaning black, a noun meaning mouth. The combined form is to be treated as a noun in apposition to the generic name.
