Etymology: perlita: Name from Latin word 'perlitus' meaning smeared or bedaubed; referring to the large, dark, diffuse cluster of chromatophores on the caudal peduncle (Ref. 69383).
This species is placed in the genus Apogon in Eschmeyer (CofF ver. May 2011: Ref. 86870).
