Etymology: Noturus: Greek, noton = back + Greek, oura = tail; refred to the position of the tail over the back (Ref. 45335); stanauli: From the Cherokee words "oostanauli" (a shoal area in a river) and "tsulistanauli" (catfish) (Ref. 10294).
