Actinopteri (ray-finned fishes) > Siluriformes
(Catfishes) > Plotosidae
Etymology: Neosilurus: Greek, neos = new + Greek, silouros = cat fish (Ref. 45335). More on author: Steindachner.
Environment: milieu / climate zone / depth range / distribution range
Freshwater; demersal; pH range: 6.8 - 8.0; dH range: ? - 30; potamodromous (Ref. 51243); depth range - m (Ref. ), usually - m (Ref. ). Tropical; 22°C - 28°C (Ref. 2060)
Oceania: endemic to Australia.
Size / Weight / Age
Maturity: Lm ?  range ? - ? cm
Max length : 34.0 cm SL male/unsexed; (Ref. 44894); common length : 20.0 cm SL male/unsexed; (Ref. 44894)
Found in clear, flowing streams, turbid rivers, lakes and stagnant pools. Also inhabits billabongs (Ref. 44894). Shoal forming species (Ref. 44894). Feeds on insects, crayfish, prawns, mollusks, worms and crustaceans (Ref. 44894). In northern populations, breeding occurs at the beginning of the wet season (January to March) in shallow sandy areas in the upper reaches of streams. The spawning habits of interior populations are unknown. Further research on the many geographic populations is required as there is a strong possibility that Hyrtl's Tandan may actually represent more than one species (Ref. 44894).
