This species is distingusied from its congeners by the following characters: teeth bifid (vs. spoon-shaped); dark spots on a light background (vs. light spots on a dark background or not spotted); without 4 rough lateral ridges on flanks (vs. strong ridges present in H. commersoni, H. spiniger, H. laplatae); plates in lateral series 28-30 (vs. < 28 in several species or 31-32 in H. laplatae); body height 13.3-18.1% in SL and head length 25.9-30.7 in SL (vs. 17.724.7% and 27.5-38.7, respectively in H. commersoni, H. spiniger, H. laplatae) (Ref. 121236).
