Present in the (upper) Zambezi (Ref. 11970, 59365, 75786, 82238, 120641) and the rivers Cunene and Cubango/Okavango (Ref. 11970, 75786, 82238, 120641). Reports of S. zambesensis from the Luembe, Luachimo, Chiumbe and Kwango (Ref. 11970) are attributed to this species in Ref. 3202, but are presently considered to be S. macropunctatus (Ref. 75786). Angolan reports of S. nigromaculatus in Ref. 82238, excluding those from Lake Calundo, are misidentifications of S. macropunctatus (Ref. 75786); possibly this is also true for the reports of S. nigromaculatus from at least the southern Congo River basin in Ref. 120641.
