Found in Tamil Nadu, Kerala and South Karnataka. Has been introduced into Andhra and Maharashtra waters (Ref. 4833). Inhabits coastal freshwater, common in paddy fields, tanks and occasionally in back waters within the tidal influence (Ref. 41236). Also Ref.43641, 45255, 87807.

Status of threat: Low risk in Western Ghats (Ref. 50614).
