Comments |
Fishing primarily takes place during the periods of concentration and breeding migration from mid-October to mid-December and mid-February to mid-May. The adults concentrate on the banks north of Cape Timiris then move along the coast, initially by using the channels between the mudholes, then along the coast south of Cape Timiris. The eggs of the females are salted and dried and sold under the name poutargue. For some years, there has been a great decline in the capture of this species particularly during the second fishing period from February to June. The Imraguen show this decline to be related to the drought in the region since the start of the 70's. The change in ecological conditions: the water temperature, upwelling and also the increased exploitation of the continental plateau can explain the decline in capture (Ref. 5377). Also Ref. 12727. |
