Endemic to Lake Tazawa in Akita Prefecture and was believed to have become extinct since 1940. Nine specimens were discovered in 2010 in Lake Saiko (Yamanashi Prefecture), one of the lakes where eyed eggs of this species were introduced in 1935 (Ref. 87053).

Status of threat: Extinct in the wild (Ref. 94887).
