Common throughout the plains; abundant in muddy streams up to an altitude of 600 m in Terai and Duars of North Bengal; fairly common in the Chilka lake (Orissa) (Ref. 4833); Maharashtra (Ref. 43634); Bhavani River, Tamil Nadu; Wynaad, Kerala (Ref. 44148); Tripura (Ref. 97593). Present in Bhimtal and Naukuchiatal lakes (Ref. 89721), Tungabhadra river, Tambraparani river system, Cauveri and Chinnar river systems, Chimmony WLS and Nilgiri Biosphere reserve (Ref. 92228).
