Occur throughout Lake Nyasa. Appears to be truly pelagic, with larvae found in nearly all samples of plankton. A pelagic plankton-feeding species which supports a large commercial fishery that recently developed in Malawi. A major food species for Opsaridium and Rhamphochromis. Shows great variations in abundance, but high fecundity enables population to develop rapidly from low levels (Ref. 4967). Also Ref. 54530.
