Occurs in Assam, northeastern Bengal, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab (Ref. 41236) and Maharashtra (Ref. 43634). Found in Ganges, Brahmaputra, Mahanadi and Cauvery river systems where it is widespread in the Cauvery watershed and is more abundant in the hills than the plains (Ref. 4832). Common (and probably introduced) in Kashmir Valley (Ref. 33323). Present in Nainital, Bhimtal and Naukuchiatal lakes (Ref. 89721). Popularly used for aquarium (Ref. 44325). Status of threat: Vulnerable in Western Ghats (Ref. 50614).
