Ranges south to Santa Catarina (Ref. 36543). Usually found in shallow waters, leass than 40 m deep, away from bays and estuaries. Reported 10 sinistral individuals and 1 reversed specimen were caught in Guanabara Bay in February 2006, where the reversed one was found to have lower number of dorsal and anal fin rays (Ref. 58292).
