Widely introduced all over the country. Presumably naturally occurring in the Atlantic Slope from Virginia to Florida, Gulf Slope west to Texas, Great Lakes, and Mississippi River basins south to the Gulf. Usually seen in lowlands; rarely encountered in uplands (Ref. 86798). Found in 1 out of 6 live fish markets near the Lakes Erie and Ontario (Ref. 53249). Also Ref. 1998, 10294.
