Known from Missouri, Arkansas, Red, Brazos, and Colorado River drainages from Montana and North Dakota south to New Mexico and Texas; Mississippi River from mouth of Missouri River to Tennessee (Ref. 86798). Recorded from the western tributaries to the Mississippi River from the upper Missouri River south, and in the western Gulf of Mexico through the Colorado River drainage of Texas (Ref. 10294). Common but sometimes abundant in Great Plains. Introduced in Pecos River in New Mexico (Ref. 86798). Also Ref. 5723.
