Introduced in north and central Italy for game fishing (Ref. 27118). In northern Italy, the species has been introduced in the Po basin and in many subalpine lakes where it competes with the native Rutilus pigus and Leucos aula. In central Italy, introductions are known for the Tiber and Arno rivers and for lakes Montedoglio and Corbara, where it caused the disappearance of the endemic Sarmarutilus rubilio (Ref. 96829). Introduced in Tuscany (in the 1990s) and in the Padano-Veneto area; but has probably not established (Ref. 13729). Naturalized in 1989. Established in the upper Adriatic river drainages. Expanding to Northeastern Italy (Ref. 45688), where it is invasive (Ref. 59043). Invasive in north, central, and southern Italy (Ref. 119201). Directly interferes with native cyprinids and tends to eliminate and interbreed with Rutilus pigus in subalpine lakes, and elsewhere (Ref. 94493). The joint introduction of R. rutilus and Chondrostoma nasus is affecting also other still water species such as Leucos aula and Chondrostoma soetta, that have nearly vanished from northern Italian lakes (Ref. 96829).Also Ref. 124672.
