Known from Black Sea, Sea of Marmara, Aegean Sea and its watersheds, European Black Sea watersheds, European Mediterranean Sea watersheds, and Anatolian Black Sea watersheds. Also Ref. 106151. Very sensitive to human activities. Considered a keystone species. Threatened due to commerical and bycatch fishing, habitat loss, eutrophication/pollution, construction of weirs/dams in rivers and aquaculture/introduction/Lessepian immigration (Ref. 58342). Also Ref. 4645.
