Type locality of Hippocampus breviceps, Adelaide. S Australia (Ref. 115213). Known from Tasmania, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia. Recorded from off Eden in New South Wales to Lancelin Islands in Western Australia (Ref. 7300). Slender-snouted forms are mostly found in Western Australia (Ref. 30915). Moved under the Australian Wildlife Protection Act in 1998 (Ref. 30915). Also Ref. 9002, 12255, 51523.
