Occurs in Mekong River and its tributaries (Ref. 9648, 26336); also from Nong Khai (Ref. 37773). From Klong Kaem to Mukdahan, it undertakes upstream migration from February-April (Ref. 37770). Also migrates upstream from Pak Lay in Laos to Chiang Khong in Thailand between March and May, which starts when the first heavy rains of the monsoon season occur or when the river water changes from relatively clear to reddish or brown color (Ref. 37770).
