Type locality, Minas Gerais, município de Jaaíba, ANSP 100891 (holotype of Stygichthys typhlops, 2.3 cm SL). Rediscovered in the area after almost 50 years after its first discovery; 34 specimens were collected in 2 shallow hand-dug wells. Collected from two shallow wells separated by 4·5 km and c. 13 km south-west of the town of Jaíba; the well at Fazenda do Seu

Roque is still occasionally used as a source of water for cattle, while the shallow well at Fazenda do Lajeado is abandoned (Ref. 84216). Regarded as threatened in the state of Minas Gerais (Ref. 26603). Also Ref. 27297.
