Type locality of the holotype of Labeotropheus candipygia: 'Malawi, Lake Malawi, Chitende Island, -10.3982807, 34.2579842' (Ref. 128773). Endemic to Lake Malawi and appears to be restricted to Chitende Island and the nearby Chitende Gap, between Chitende Point and Chitende Island (Ref. 128773).
