Found in rivers of west central Italy (Serchio, Arno, Ombrone and Tiber basins) (Ref. 12215); including Elsa Torrent and Era R., both affluents of Arno R. (Ref. 43646). P. martensii has been introduced to its area. In 1974 a reduction in abundance and occurrence was noted, but new localities have been listed in 1980. The introduction of P. bonelli, a direct competitor will probably cause the extinction of this species (Ref. 45688). Also Ref. 27118, 45688, 92840, 94493.
