Type localities of Hippocampus whitei, neotype I.40831-018, Sydney Harbour, New South Wales (Ref. 115213) and of Hippocampus procerus, 5-11 km NW Hervey Bay, Fairway Buoy, Queensland (Ref. 42735). Inhabits coastal estuaries and embayments. In central New South Wales, from St. Georges Basin (sighting and photographed), Port Hacking, Botany Bay, Sydney Harbour, Hawkesbury River, Tuggerah Lake, Lake Macquarie, Port Stephens, Wallis Lake - Forster, and Tweed River. In Queensland, from Gold Coast Seaway, at various locations around Moreton Bay estuary, Hervey Bay, Waddy Point, Elliot Heads, Bundaberg, Port Curtis, and Mackay, being the northernmost location (Ref. 125503).
