Comments: Recorded from bottom trawls off the east coast of South Island (Ref. 58461). Most common between Cook Strait and Dunedin, either singly or in large groups. Voucher specimen(s) held at the NMNZ (Ref. 5755). Also Ref. 247, 6885, 43278.

(See ETYFish);  maximus: Latin for greatest, being the largest known fish (i.e., non-mammalian aquatic vertebrate) at the time (superseded by Rhincodon typus). (See ETYFish).
