Comments: Widespread in coastal waters throughout New Zealand (Ref. 9258). The species is a major by-catch of inshore trawl fisheries. Caught throughout the year (Ref. 9258). Recorded in trawl surveys in Chatham Islands (Ref. 45493) and off the east coast of South Island (Ref. 58461). The results of the 1991-92 recreational fishing survey did not indicate red gurnard as a species of importance to recreational fishery. Voucher specimen(s) held at the NMNZ. Also Ref. 8879, 9072, 75154.
