Comments: Distributed from Northland to the Campbell Plateau, on the Challenger Plateau to the west, and around the Chatham Islands to the east (Ref. 57469). Usually found from 300-600 meters, habitat depth ranges from 100 - 1,000 meters (Ref. 57469). Recorded from bottom trawls off the east coast of South Island (Ref. 58461). First record in the Chathams Island (Ref. 45493). Voucher specimen(s) held at the NMNZ.

Etymology: Centriscops: Greek, kentris, -idos = sting + Greek, ops = appearance (Ref. 45335);  humerosus: Centriscops is the Greek word for bellows and eye (meaning a bellowsfish with a large eye) and humerosus for shoulders (referring to the large bony plates on the upper flanks) (Ref. 57469).
