Known from Lake Mweru (Ref. 246, 75786) (including the Luongo River; Ref. 27609), Luapula River (Ref. 75786, 82238), Lake Bangweulu (Ref. 246, 82238, 75786, 92521), Chambezi River (Ref. 75786, 82238) and Upper Zambezi floodplain (Ref. 12597, 75786). Present in Kasanka National Park (Ref. 95585). Absent from the Lake Tanganyika drainage (Ref. 59365, 78218). Type locality of the holotype of Synodontis nigromaculatus: 'Lake Bangwelo' (Ref. 92521).
