Known from Black Sea, Sea of Marmara, Aegean Sea and its watersheds, European Black Sea watersheds, European Mediterranean Sea watersheds,
Anatolian Black Sea watersheds and Anatolian Mediterranean Sea watersheds. Threatened due to commercial fishing, habitat loss, eutrophication/pollution and construction of weirs/dams in rivers. Also Ref. 106151. In Appendix
III of the Bern Convention (protected fauna). Listed on Annex II of the EU Habitats Directive (Ref. 58342).
